'God helps those who help themselves'

The saying, "God helps those who help themselves," has come down to us from Aesop's Fable, 'Hercules and the Waggoner'. According to the story, a waggoner was driving a heavy load along a muddy path. He came to the part of the road where his wagon got struch in the mud. He prayed to Hercules to help him get his wagon out. Hercules answered his prayer and said, "Put your shoulder to the wheel. God helps them that help themselves." The waggoner acted on the advice of Hercules and pulled out his wagon from the mud. In the course of time, the saying, "God helps them that help themselves" evolved into "God helps those who help themselves."

We gain in life through hard work and perseverance. The mordern advancements in science and technology started with the work of individuals. In their efforts, they were helped by God or a supernatural force that controls human destiny. Their ultimate success must be attributed to their own labour along with the power of the invisible God. According to the Karma theory, we get what we deserve. We reap the consequences of our good and bad deeds.

It is only when we make efforts that God assists us in achieving our goals. Once there was a flood in a small town and everyone ran for safety. A holy man, however, stayed behind saying, "God will save me." As the water level rose, a jeep came to rescue him but the man refused to go. As the water level rose further, he went up to the second storey. A boat came for his help but he refused to take the help. When the water kept rising, he climbed up to the terrace. A helicopter came to rescue him but he said, "God will save me." Suddenly lightning struck the man and he dropped dead. When he reached heaven, he asked God why he did not save him. To this God replied, "Didn't save you! Who do you think sent you the jeep, the boat and the helicopter?" The moral of the story is that God helped him but the man did not help himself.

Success cannot be had merely by wishing or asking for it. One has to struggle, sweat and make sacrifices for it. God does not come to the aid of those who refuse to exert themselves. There are students who do not study throughout the year and during the exam time ask God to help them. They fail to understand that God has been helping them by providing the opportunity and resources to study. It is they who have ignored God's help and whiled away their time in useless pursuits. Thus, God's help will be effective only if we earnestly try to do our part.
